Fostering Inclusive Pedagogy through Linguistic Diversity

Presentation Description: With more students seeking education in the US, campuses are becoming more diverse. However, educational practices often overlook linguistic diversity and fail to address language bias. This panel highlights the importance of linguistic diversity in higher education. It illustrates the effects of linguistic discrimination and diversity on student learning. It explains the role of linguistic diversity in advancing equity and access in higher education and proposes pedagogical guidelines that promote educational opportunities tailored to all students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify current educational practices that perpetuate linguistic discrimination and biases encountered by international students in the U.S.
  • Recognize linguistic diversity as the key to enhancing social justice and inclusion in higher education by understanding the impact of linguistics on the educational development of international students.
  • Create strategies going beyond conventional teaching and support services to address linguistic biases and encourage linguistic diversity in the classroom.
