Having culturally sensitive conversations on religious, secular, and spiritual identities
Thursday, October 31, 2024
2:15 PM – 3:15 PM CDT
Location: Schaumburg H
Presentation Description: Study Abroad Programs throughout the United States often struggle to discuss with students the importance of Religious, Secular, and Spiritual Identities (RSSIs). This session offers opportunities for how to help practitioners effectively incorporate into continuous learning the need to consider the geopolitics, culture, and RSSIs of the regions students are studying abroad in. By moving toward curiosity and critical awareness of such identities and their interactions with the culture of the communities students, students will learn more during their time abroad.
Learning Objectives:
Practitioners will be given tools to incorporate into study abroad training RSSI information
Practitioners will interrogate biases and implicit biases regarding RSSIs
Practitioners will grow in their awareness of the intersections of culture and RSSIs present in many study abroad settings.
