Internship Learning - reframing global internships in an academic framework

Presentation Description:

As experiential International Ed. and career services intersect, it is increasingly difficult to define and communicate the different expectations, levels of support, and academic rigor involved in a global internship program versus traditional internships. In this session, we are proposing new language and frameworks to define “internship-learning” for our field, to help institutions advocate for more experiential, career-focussed learning opportunities as part of our globalization efforts.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize the challenges facing international educators offering global internships, compared to traditional internships and study abroad - Including academic rigor, the ethics of unpaid work, plus student and institutional expectations
Define how global internships differ from traditional internships and outline institutional expectations when developing global internship programs
Develop an approach for educators to advocate for “internship learning” as part of an internationalization strategy
