Fostering Group Dynamics in Short-Term Study Abroad

Presentation Description:

Establishing a positive group dynamic with students going on short-term, faculty-led programs is crucial to program success.  This presentation will provide an overview of how to help develop the group dynamic prior to departure, including specific examples of topics to address and a wide variety of activities to employ.  It will also highlight an interactive board game called Buddy Abroad that has been developed specifically for the purpose of preparing students to be successful on short-term study abroad programs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key concepts important to developing a strong group dynamic for students participating in short-term faculty-led programs.
  • Develop a set of varied activities useful in helping establish a strong group dynamic.
  • Recognize the potential impact of game-based learning to build community in the classroom.
