The other side of the Bridge: International Student to Advisor

Presentation Description: In Chinese, there is a saying “Thousands of troops cross the single-plank bridge” to describe extreme competition or hardship. This expression can be used to describe the immigration journey. This session, led by two international student advisors who transitioned from international students to key roles in ISSS, will share personal experiences, challenges, lessons learned, and practical advice for practitioners seeking to understand both perspectives.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the dual perspective and gain insight into the common obstacles faced by international students, and unique challenges advisors encounter during their advising daily work, and how these challenges make impacts on international community.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the cultural nuances and pressures that affect international students, leading to more empathetic and effective advising through active discussion.
  • Explore actionable tips and effective practices by learning from the firsthand experiences of those who have navigated both student and advisor roles.
