Higher Ed Institutions and Non-Traditional Immigrants

Presentation Description: Higher education has generally supported faculty, staff and students with temporary student and scholar visa and employment-based permanent residence sponsorship. The increasing presence of foreign nationals unlawfully present or those in categories such as DACA, TPS, asylee/refugee as students and employees requires that these institutions reexamine policies regarding admission, employment and other support for such individuals. The discussion will review who are these individuals, current policies and support, and sources of information and assistance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn about the variety of programs and statuses held by many of their employees and students allowing them to work and/or study in the United States.
  • Attendees will learn the basics of programs such as TPS, DACA, parole in place, deferred action and others.
  • The information presented will allow attendees to see how their institutions might better support those in non-traditional categories in policy making with admissions, personnel and academic units.
