Presentation Description: This session will provide a general overview of common immigration statuses seen at universities such as F-1, J-1, TN, H-1B as well as permanent residency. We will discuss the purpose of each status, how the status can be obtained, how long someone can hold each status and the documents related to each status. This session is beneficial for newer advisors of international students and staff, and seasoned advisors seeking to gain and/or refresh their knowledge of statuses they encounter infrequently.

Learning Objectives:

  • After this presentation, attendees will have a general understanding of some of the more commonly seen statuses at universities.
  • After this presentation, attendees will have a general understanding of the documents associated with these statuses.
  • After this presentation, attendees will have a general understanding of the costs and other strategic considerations associated with some of the more commonly seen statuses at universities.
